(English) M-graphs

In linguistics a graph is a rendering of one of the irreducible units that make up a written language. A, 人,!,ㅗ, ض , θ, are all examples of graphs. They lead a double existence as pictures (yes even a horizontal line is a picture) and language elements.

“M” is a letter of the alphabet but it could also be a picture of a wave or a mountain valley. In this case it is a placeholder for any meaningful thought that is difficult to articulate. These kinds of thoughts can be very frustrating, as anyone who has used a thesaurus knows.

If a picture were created to represent this thought that had the qualities of a graph, then theoretically it could establish itself in written language (something like a punctuation mark or ’emoticon’ in alphabetic writing, or a new character in Chinese). At a minimum it should be:

  • easily reproducible,
  • easily distinguishable,
  • yet also sharing familial traits of other graphs in the language.

What creative projects exist that may be characterized as M-graph “like”? What M-graph “like” forms of art might be created? The changing relationship between humankind and nature and the vague blandness of language we use to talk about it suggest a promising field of discovery.
